We were only in Puerto Escondido for a week and we spent most of our time lounging around our immediate area in Brisas de Zicatela (or La Punta, is it is commonly called) rather than trying to find tourist attractions to visit, which would have been mostly other beaches anyway. For what it’s worth here is our list of places we enjoyed during our stay.
Monchistation
Located on the main street in La Punta (Alejandro Cardenas Peralta), this restaurant has delicious wok dinners with meat, fish and veggies, for 100 pesos. You select the protein (beef, chicken, or fish), the starch (noodles or rice), and the sauce (several different sauces available, sweet, spicy, peanut, coconut, etc., or you can combine more than one). We ate here twice and really enjoyed the meals. Warning…the service is very slow, so if you are in a hurry, this is not the place to go.
Hamburguesa Wimpy
By far the low price champion in La Punta. Cheese burgers for 30 pesos. Located on Nuevo Leon, next to the main street. The hours and days this place is open are unpredictable. In fact, even though it was located a block from where we were staying and we went by it all the time, we only managed to find it open during its claimed operating hours once during the week. But the hamburgers were worth more than the 30 pesos we spent. I think fries were an extra 10 pesos.
La Olita
This taco place is located near the main Playa Zicatela beach. We went there because it was highly recommended on Trip Advisor and we weren’t disappointed. The specialties are seafood tacos, which we both had, and they were delicious.
Pinches Tacos
Another good taco place on the main street in La Punta. We ate here twice and had a selection of shrimp and fish tacos both times. Excellent tasting and cheap, just what we like.
El Lugar
This is another place on the main street in La Punta which offers decent fare like sandwiches and salads, but we particularly liked the meat pies which we asked about three days in a row and were told each time “tomorrow”. We finally scored one on day four after the SuperBowl and it was really good.
Fruit & Veggie shop
There is an indoor fruit and vegetable market on the main street in La Punta, across from El Lugar, where we bought our fresh fruit and veggies. But the thing they have there that blew us away was the fresh maracuya (passion fruit) drink they make daily and serve from a large plastic cooler. We had them plain or with a little tequila added for a passionfruit margarita. After we found out about them we bought them every day. Go early in the day…they run out by early afternoon.
The Beaches
All the beaches in the area are fantastic and scenic. Playa Zicatela is great for a long walk, especially if you start at La Punta and walk all the way to the other end. The two main areas on the long beach with restaurants and bars are Brisas de Zicatela (La Punta) and Playa Zicatela, the more affluent and trendy area of the beach, which starts about 2/3 of the way towards the main town. La Punta has a dozen or so places to eat and drink, many of them on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Playa Zicatela probably has twice that number, many of which are higher up on the price spectrum, and definitely more places to sit on the beach and drink beer and margaritas. For good swimming and sheer beauty, Playa Carazalillo is a must visit as well.
